Controllers di scambio di calore offre protezione del circuito da molti possibili pericoli causati da improvvisi cambiamenti nell'alimentazione. Questo tipo di IC è in grado di monitorare condizioni di sovratensione e sottotensione e aprire e chiudere i commutatori molto rapidamente per proteggere circuiti sensibili quando viene rilevata una condizione di alimentazione non sicura. Inoltre alcuni controller possono essere dotati di caratteristiche avanzate come timer, limitatori di corrente, sfasatori di tensione e altre funzioni di supervisione che possono essere d'aiuto per l'accensione o lo spegnimento sicuro quando l'alimentazione viene interrotta o attivata improvvisamente.
